  24.             Unidata is a national program to help  universities  acquire
  25.             weather  data  and  to  analyze  and  display those data for
  26.             teaching and research. The program is funded by the National
  27.             Science Foundation and managed by the University Corporation
  28.             for Atmospheric Research. Unidata negotiates  a  group  con-
  29.             tract  with  a  commercial  data-broadcasting  firm  so that
  30.             universities may receive weather data at a  discount.   Uni-
  31.             data   develops  and  distributes  software  for  capturing,
  32.             analyzing, and displaying those data locally.  Unidata  also
  33.             advocates  on  behalf  of  universities  on  data  issues in
  34.             Federal and other arenas.

  36.             Unidata-developed software includes the Unidata  Local  Data
  37.             Manager  (LDM), which captures real-time weather data from a
  38.             satellite  broadcast,  and  netCDF,  a  network-transparent,
  39.             self-describing  form  for storing scientific data.  The LDM
  40.             is being enhanced to allow users to capture and forward data
  41.             over the Internet.

  43.             Unidata  distributes  applications  software  developed  and
  44.             licensed  by  universities.  These  are  Purdue University's
  45.             Weather Processor (WXP) and the  University  of  Wisconsin's
  46.             McIDAS-OS2  and  McIDAS-X  software.  WXP  and  McIDAS-X are
  47.             UNIX-based applications; McIDAS-OS2 runs on  PS/2  computers
  48.             with the OS/2 operating system. Unidata also distributes and
  49.             supports the UNIX version  of  NASA's  GEMPAK  (for  General

  72.             Unidata provides bug fixes, upgrades, and software distribu-
  73.             tions  over  the Internet. Software support includes forming
  74.             and maintaining  special-interest  mailing  lists,  offering
  75.             advice  on  hardware  acquisitions,  and  holding semiannual
  76.             training workshops in the use of Unidata-supported software.
  77.             Consultation  with users is conducted via email. The program
  78.             also publishes a quarterly newsletter.

  80.             _N_e_t_w_o_r_k _A_c_c_e_s_s

  82.             Unidata is connected via a LAN to NCAR, an  NSFNET  backbone
  83.             site.   All  software  is  distributed  via ftp. The Unidata
  84.             NetCDF software  is  freely  available;  you  can  access  a
  85.             compressed  tar  file  ("cd  incnetcdf.tar.Z"  in  directory
  86.             "pub") via anonymous ftp from "unidata.ucar.edu".

  88.             _W_h_o _C_a_n _U_s_e _t_h_e _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e

  90.             The Unidata netCDF software is freely available.  All  other
  91.             Unidata  software is restricted to universities and requires
  92.             licenses.
